What is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) in Cyprus?

Low Cost IVF Cyprus

Our low cost IVF treatment in Cyprus is a high-tech assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure that involves collecting eggs from the female ovaries and fertilizing them with the partner’s (or donor) sperm in our laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred on day three or day five after egg collection. IVF in Cyprus is a popular fertility treatment with high success rates.

Who needs IVF in Cyprus?

IVF in Cyprus is a treatment for individuals and couples in which previous fertility treatments have been unsuccessful, or for those who have medical conditions that cannot be treated with other fertility treatments. Due to the major advances in assisted reproductive technology, IVF is often the treatment of first choice.

Who is eligible for IVF in Cyprus?

IVF in Cyprus is recommended to women who struggle with fertility issues such as:

  • damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • uterine abnormalities
  • endometriosis
  • unexplained infertility
  • genetic diseases (IVF with PGD may be indicated)
  • infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss related to chromosomal abnormalities (IVF with PGS may be recommended)

IVF Cyprus is also an option for couples who are experiencing male factor infertility.  IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) enables couples suffering from abnormal sperm to be able to build a family. ICSI in Cyprus is a highly advanced technique of fertilization used  during IVF that increases significantly the likelihood of fertilizing the collected eggs with the sperm. At EuroCARE IVF in North Cyprus, we use ICSI for all IVF treatments with at no extra cost.

Why IVF in Cyprus is Beneficial?

  • IVF in Cyprus successfully treats successfully male and female infertility. Women with missing, damaged, or blocked fallopian tubes, premature ovarian failure, endometriosis or PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) can benefit from IVF.
  • IVF in Cyprus can also help men with both known and unexplained infertility issues to conceive a baby. In some cases of severe male infertility, surgical sperm retrieval may be performed to obtain viable sperm for fertilization. Micro TESE in Cyprus can be performed on men who can’t ejaculate sperm, including those with irreversible vasectomies, testicular cancer survivors, and men with low or no sperm count, blockages, and other medical conditions.
  • When combined with PGS or PGD in Cyprus, IVF in Cyprus increases the chances of conception of a healthy child. Couples who are known carriers of genetic disorders and are concerned about passing on a genetic disorder or chromosomal abnormality on their child(ren) can have PGS or PGD testing performed on their embryos before transfer. Embryos are screened with highly advanced genetic screening technologies such as PGS or PGD in Cyprus.
  • IVF in Cyprus allows you to choose the sex of your baby either for medical or non-medical reasons. Gender selection for non-medical reasons gives parents to balance their families by choosing to have a baby of the desired sex.
  • If you have a low ovarian reserve or poor egg quality, using donor eggs may increase your likelihood of pregnancy success. You can choose an egg donor from our EuroCARE IVF donor database for your treatment.
  • Same-sex couples can also benefit from IVF treatment in Cyprus. These couples can now build a family using donor eggs or sperm.
  • With IVF Cyprus, you can freeze any remaining good-quality embryos for future use. Alternatively, you can choose to have your eggs at the right time frozen (cryopreservation) and used for fertilization in future IVF cycles.

How is IVF in Cyprus carried out?

This is an overview of the IVF process step by step:

Step One: Consultation

Your first step towards parenthood begins with connecting with our patient coordinators. During the initial IVF consultation, our North Cyprus fertility specialist will review the information you have provided and discuss any previous tests or treatments you have undergone. Once your treatment options have been discussed and all questions have been answered, you will receive instructions on the next step of the treatment process.

During your consultation, our IVF specialist may also suggest completing certain tests to assess your uterus and ovarian function. These are routine procedures and may be suggested to determine the best course of action for your IVF treatment in Cyprus. You do not need to travel to Cyprus for the first consultation. You can have a Skype or Whatsapp call with our doctor or patient coordinator.

Step Two: Cycle Suppression

In some instances, patients are prescribed medication to suppress their natural menstrual cycle. This is to ensure that the medication used for ovarian stimulation will be more effective. Our fertility doctor will decide if you need suppression medications.

Step Three: Ovarian Stimulation

Once your natural cycle has been suppressed, the next step will be to receive IVF hormone injections to stimulate the production of multiple eggs in the ovaries. Having more eggs offers a greater choice of embryos to use for transfer.

Step Four: Monitoring

During the ovarian stimulation phase, you will have routine check-ups on your progress. You will be monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds that will evaluate the response of your ovaries to the hormone injections and will measure the growth of the eggs.

Step Five: Trigger Shot

When your eggs reach 18 to 20 mm in size, you will be administered a hCG injection, also known as a trigger shot. This will be your final hormone injection that will help your eggs to mature.

Step Six: Egg Collection

36 to 38 hours after you have received the hCG injection (trigger shot), your eggs will be collected at our IVF clinic in Cyprus in a simple medical procedure that requires light sedation. Your eggs will be collected using ultrasound to visualize the ovaries and a fine needle attached to a catheter that will retrieve the mature eggs from the follicles in the ovaries. Egg collection in Cyprus is a minor procedure that lasts around 15-20 minutes.

Step Seven: Egg Fertilization

The collected eggs are held in a special culture media until fertilization. The collected eggs are then fertilized in our EuroCARE IVF laboratory. Two days later, normal embryos will be between two and six cells. Three days after fertilization, embryos will be between seven and nine cells. On the fourth day of development, most normal embryos will reach the morula stage. On day 5 after egg collection, some of the embryos will reach the blastocyst stage.

Step Seven: Embryo Transfer

While the embryos develop in our lab, you will start taking hormone medications to prepare the lining of the uterus to receive the embryo.

After the fertilized eggs, now called embryos, have been cultured for a few days in our lab, our fertility specialist will perform embryo transfer. The embryos are transferred via a catheter that is passed through the cervix and into the uterus. This procedure is simple and does not require any sedation. However, you may be prescribed a light sedative upon request to help you feel relaxed during the procedure. The number of embryos for transfer will depend on your age and their quality and stage of development.

Step Eight: Pregnancy Test

Twelve days after your embryo transfer, a beta hCG blood test is completed to measure your levels of the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Elevated hCG level is an early indicator of pregnancy.

Can IVF work the first time?

A basic grounding in the variables affecting IVF success rates allows you to make an informed decision when it comes to choosing a fertility care center. Some of the numerous scientific factors that influence the outcome of every woman’s IVF treatment are FSH levels, age, the number of unsuccessful IVF attempts (or the number of unsuccessful natural attempts), ovarian reserve, stress, weight and BMI, structural or mechanical problems with the reproductive system, the age of the embryo at the time of transfer (Day 2, 3, 4 or blastocyst), and the number of eggs produced in a given cycle.

At EuroCARE IVF, 8 out of 10 patients undergoing IVF in Cyprus are achieving a positive pregnancy result. The success rates for women under 35 range between 67 and 78 percent per cycle. For women aged 35-39 the success rate is approximately 49%. Women between the ages of 40 and 44 have a 29 percent chance of achieving success through IVF in Cyprus.

Will IVF in Cyprus work for me?

The probability of success with IVF in Cyprus depends upon a number of factors including:

  • Age

Your age is an important factor to consider before undergoing IVF in Cyprus. After the age of 36, the number of healthy eggs you produce rapidly declines. To increase your chances of a successful pregnancy, you may be recommended another fertility treatment such as Embryo donation or Egg donation in Cyprus.

  • Cause(s) of infertility

Some of the factors that may decrease IVF success include uterine malformation, uterine fibroid and ovulation disorder. Another factor to consider is the length of time you have been infertile.

  • Lifestyle factors

Smoking has a negative impact on the quality of the eggs a woman is producing. Obesity is another lifestyle factor that may interfere with your ability to get pregnant via IVF in Cyprus.

  • Donor eggs

Donor eggs are used to help you in the conception of a child if you are unable to conceive with your own eggs. Age and egg quality affect IVF success. For this reason, we use high-quality eggs provided by young, elite donors from our EuroCARE IVF donor database.

Will IVF in Cyprus work after menopause?

After you reach menopause, your ability to become pregnant significantly decreases, making IVF intervention much needed. Although you no longer ovulate and your ovarian reserve has dramatically diminished, you can still benefit from IVF in Cyprus. We deeply understand your desire for starting a family, and have developed appropriate programs for women in menopause to help them conceive a healthy child. For this purpose, our EuroCARE IVF clinic in Cyprus offers individual, personalized IVF treatments after menopause including:

How to improve your chances of IVF success?

If you are trying to conceive, there are a few guidelines you should follow in order to optimize your chances of pregnancy:

  •       Eat well, getting plenty of protein and vitamins
  •       Stop drinking alcohol, and quit smoking
  •       Avoid pesticides and herbicides
  •       Know your cycle of ovulation and menstruation
  •       Try relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga

Can I select gender with IVF in Cyprus?

Gender selection in Cyprus allows you to choose the gender of your baby. There are two gender selection methods that we use at EuroCARE IVF: Sperm Swim Up or Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) Cyprus.

  • Swim Up Method

Sperm swim up is a sperm sorting method that sorts out the sperm into ‘female’ and ‘male’ batches. The swim up method takes advantage of the much larger X (female) chromosome over the Y (male) chromosome, therefore making it easier to have a baby girl. A sperm sample is first collected from the father. The sperm is then processed and separated into X-bearing and Y-bearing sperm cells. Depending on your request, we will use the adequate sperm cells to conceive a baby boy or baby girl.

This gender selection method help our fertility specialist to avoid a gender-related diseases in the offspring before birth.

  • PGS Testing Cyprus

IVF with PGS in Cyprus involves approximately 10 days of daily ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs. Then, under sedation, the eggs are retrieved using transvaginal-guided aspiration. Later that same day, single sperm cells are injected into the eggs in our EuroCARE IVF lab to achieve fertilization.

On day three of embryo development one cell from each embryo is removed for lab analysis. The test results are usually available on day five. In addition to choosing the gender, we can also screen chromosomes 13, 18 and 21, which are known to cause almost 90% of all genetic-linked disorders, such as Down’s syndrome. Embryos are checked before transfer to determine any abnormality that may cause developmental or implantation failure. Chromosomal abnormalities are a result of an abnormal division of either the egg or sperm cells.

When the results are ready, embryos will be graded for quality and selected for transfer. After the selection is done, embryos of the desired sex are transferred to the woman’s uterus. Embryo transfer is a simple procedure that does not require any sedation and takes only 15-20 minutes.
