What is IVF? Understanding the Basics of In Vitro Fertilization
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a groundbreaking assisted reproductive technology that enables eggs and sperm to combine outside the body, creating embryos for transfer to the uterus. This process has helped countless families overcome fertility challenges and achieve their dream of parenthood.
During IVF, retrieved eggs and sperm are combined in a specialized culture medium called embryo glue that enhances the chances of successful fertilization. At our onsite IVF laboratory, we meticulously monitor and nurture the developing embryos, grading them for quality. Once the embryos reach the blastocyst stage (when fertilized eggs develop into a rapidly dividing group of cells), we carefully select the best ones for transfer to the recipient’s uterus. All IVF procedures—including ovarian stimulation, egg and sperm retrieval, fertilisation using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and embryo transfers—are conducted at our state-of-the-art facility in North Cyprus.
A typical IVF cycle takes approximately 18 to 20 days. However, if you live abroad and begin your medication in your home country, your time in Cyprus can be reduced to as little as 8 to 10 days.
Recent advancements in medicine and assisted reproductive technology have significantly reduced the risks associated with IVF. However, as with any medical procedure, particular complications can occur:
- Multiple pregnancies – increases the risk of low birth weight and premature birth
- Miscarriage – pregnancy loss
- Ectopic pregnancy – the eggs implant outside the uterus
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) – a condition involving an excess of fluid in the abdomen and chest
- Bleeding, infection, or damage to the bowels or bladder (rare)
At EuroCARE IVF, we prioritize your safety and well-being at every stage of treatment. Our team is committed to minimizing risks and providing personalized care to support you through any potential challenges. With today’s advancements in assisted reproductive technology and a compassionate, expert team by your side, we strive to make your IVF journey as safe, comfortable, and successful as possible.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for IVF? Find Out if IVF is Right for You
IVF is often recommended for a variety of fertility issues, including:
- Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Those with ovulation disorders or other medical issues affecting fertility
- When genetic disorders may be present
- Women over 40 experiencing decreased fertility
- Same-sex couples and single parents using donor eggs or sperm
- Couples with unexplained infertility
If you’re facing fertility challenges, our experienced team will assess your unique situation to determine if IVF is the right option for you. Before trying IVF, our doctors may recommend alternative therapies, such as infertility medication or IUI (intrauterine insemination). If there is still no progress after an IUI or after 3 to 6 months of taking medication, IVF may be a beneficial choice for you.
If genetic disorders are a concern, a Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) can be carried out to check the embryos for certain genetic conditions. This helps ensure only genetically healthy embryos are transferred to the uterus during the IVF treatment.

The IVF Process: Step-by-Step Guide to Your Fertility Journey
Our patients can expect the following steps throughout their IVF treatment with us:
Step 1 | Testing
The first step in your IVF journey is to undergo essential testing to assess your fertility levels, including:
- Hormone blood tests: FSH, AMH, TSH, E2, and Prolactin
- Infection screening: Tests for HIV, HBsAg, and Anti-HCV
- Trans-vaginal ultrasound: Determines Antral Follicle Count and identifies any issues, such as fibroids or polyps
- Semen analysis for your partner: For intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
After reviewing your results, our doctors will confirm the best treatment plan for you, along with the necessary prescriptions and medication protocol. We partner with various pharmacies that can deliver medications to most countries, including Europe, India, the U.S, and the UK.
Step 2 | Stimulation Phase
Once you’re ready to begin treatment, you’ll start your IVF cycle on day one of your menstrual cycle. On day two, you’ll begin your stimulation injections. After five days of injections, you’ll undergo a scan to monitor the development of your follicles and eggs. At this stage, our expert doctors may adjust your treatment plan as needed, such as changing the medication dosage or adjusting the timing of further injections to prevent premature ovulation.
When using your own eggs, daily doses of synthetic hormones are administered to stimulate the development of multiple eggs. This approach increases the likelihood of successful fertilization, as not all eggs will fertilize or develop into viable embryos. Additionally, collecting multiple eggs enhances your chances of having high-quality blastocyst embryos for transfer.
Throughout the stimulation process, various medications are used. Injections are typically required for about 10 days to promote follicle growth. Each follicle contains an egg, and the size of the follicle indicates the maturity of the egg inside. The injections generally contain a combination of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH).
As follicles develop, a second injection is administered to prevent ovulation, keeping the eggs in the ovaries until they are ready for collection. Regular scans are essential to monitor follicle growth. When the eggs are mature, a final injection (HCG trigger) stimulates their final maturation.
After egg retrieval, medication is also used to prepare the uterine lining for implantation and support a potential pregnancy. Your doctor and patient coordinator will guide you through each step, providing information on medication use and scheduling for egg collection and embryo transfer.
The entire treatment process typically takes about 16 to 18 days, but it’s not necessary to stay in Cyprus for the full duration if you begin medication at home. We’ll discuss all details in advance and create a treatment plan that’s best suited for your specific needs.
In rare cases, certain factors may cause treatment to be postponed or canceled, including:
- Insufficient number of follicles or eggs
- Thin or irregular uterine lining
- Premature ovulation
- Excessive number of follicles (hyperstimulation)
If any of these situations arise, our doctors will discuss options with you, such as alternative medication protocols, freezing embryos for a later date, or considering other treatments, like egg donation.
Step 3 | Egg & Sperm Retrieval
On day nine of the treatment process, if you’re not currently in North Cyprus, you’ll travel abroad to our fertility clinic for a scheduled appointment. The following day, you’ll undergo another scan at our clinic. When your eggs are fully matured, the hCG injection is given, and 36 hours later, the eggs are collected through ultrasound-guided aspiration.
During the egg retrieval process, you’ll be lightly sedated, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the procedure, which typically takes about 20 minutes. Multiple eggs can be collected successfully during this time.
Your partner’s (or donor’s) sperm sample will also be collected on the same day at the clinic and processed in our onsite laboratory. If necessary, surgical sperm retrieval methods like TESA or TESE can be arranged, usually in cases where no sperm is present in the provided sample. If you’re using a sperm donor, this will have already been organized and will be available on the day of egg collection.
Once the eggs are collected, they will be fertilized using the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure. ICSI is utilized in all IVF treatments at our clinic, as it’s the most effective fertilization method, involving the injection of a single healthy sperm directly into each mature egg.
Step 4 | Embryo Transfer
After fertilization, our medical team will monitor your embryos closely over the next few days. The embryo transfer is scheduled when they reach their optimal development stage, typically on day five when they become blastocysts. This timing allows our fertility doctors to assess which embryos have developed best, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
On the transfer day, our doctors will discuss the quality and quantity of your embryos with you, ensuring you feel informed and supported as you take this important step in your journey to parenthood.
Advanced IVF Techniques: Enhancing Success with the Latest Innovations
To enhance your chances of success, EuroCARE IVF offers a range of advanced techniques:
- Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI): This method involves selecting the healthiest sperm based on morphology (its form and structure) and injecting it directly into the egg, significantly improving fertilization rates.
- Blastocyst Transfer: This technique allows us to transfer embryos that have developed for five to six days, increasing the chances of implantation and a successful pregnancy.
- Assisted Hatching: In cases where the embryo’s zona pellucida (outer layer) is too thick, assisted hatching can help facilitate implantation in the uterus. Assisted hatching helps an embryo “hatch” from its outer layer by creating a small crack in the zona pellucida.
- Embryo Glue: This innovative medium can improve the implantation rates of embryos, providing an additional boost to the IVF process.
- Embryo and Egg Freezing: This process cryogenically preserves your eggs or embryos for future use by freezing them at an extremely cold temperature, providing flexibility and peace of mind for those who may want to delay parenthood.
- Ovarian Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Application: This cutting-edge procedure uses the regenerative power of your body’s own platelets to stimulate ovarian activity, enhance follicular development, and improve fertility. Ovarian PRP Therapy may be a suitable option for women experiencing age-related ovarian decline or other fertility challenges. It’s a safe and personalized approach to rejuvenating ovarian health for women seeking new hope.
- Endometrial Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): If you’re experiencing thin endometrium or challenges with implantation, Endometrial PRP Therapy offers a regenerative solution using your body’s natural platelets. This innovative treatment promotes the repair and rejuvenation of the uterine lining by delivering concentrated growth factors that encourage tissue regeneration and improve blood flow. By creating a healthier, more receptive uterine environment, PRP Therapy enhances the potential for successful embryo implantation, offering renewed hope for women facing these fertility challenges.
- Acupuncture Before and After Embryo Transfer: At EuroCARE IVF, we integrate proven holistic therapies with advanced fertility care to support your journey. Acupuncture before and after embryo transfer is a complementary technique grounded in both tradition and modern research. By boosting uterine blood flow and fostering relaxation, acupuncture helps prepare your body for successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy. This approach promotes balance and provides additional support during this critical phase of IVF treatment.
We also provide IVF for women over 40, tandem IVF, mini IVF, and sperm / egg donor fertility treatment options. Contact us today to learn more about our IVF treatments in Cyprus and take the first step towards your dream of parenthood.
